For the uninitiated – probably just about everyone these days, baseball having fallen from its lofty perch as “America’s Passtime.” Remember “baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie?” These days its more along the lines of – football, ribs, and funnel cakes.
Here is the breakdown MLB = major league baseball. ALCS = American League Championship Series. The series of games that determine which team represents the American League in the World Series.
For once, I can root for either team. Having grown up in the Mickey Mantle – Roger Maris era of baseball, I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was counting my age on one hand. (I still do that, but I start over so many times I cramp up.)
I’ve been to more Rangers games than any other team. We were lucky enough to see some great ones there: Nolan Ryan, Griffey Jr. (playing for the Mariners). They’re close to home, a great atmosphere, fun ballpark. Club section with waiters bringing drinks and nachos.
So, despite the cruel comments I’ve already read about Yankee fans (obnoxious being one of the kinder words used), I’m ready to cheer on both teams. I’d love for the Yanks to head to the post-season again: it’s tradition for me! On the other hand, I know full well the Rangers have not been. Not once.
Maybe it’s time to spread the glory around a little. Nolan is back in the house, this time as an owner of the Rangers. A couple of the Yankee starters are former Rangers. On the other hand, George Steinbrenner is looking down on this one, the longtime owner having been called up in July.
I think I’ll root for good calls from the umpires and let it go at that…
