Rare, Collectible, & Otherwise

Extreme blogging.

It’s late to be asking this, but when did everything turn – Extreme?

One of the earliest appearances, as far as I can recall, had to do with ESPN and their Extreme Sports. Compared to four hour baseball games and Sunday afternoon coverage of quietly-announced golf events, leaping from a helicopter to ski down the snow-covered face of an Alpine mountainside does seem pretty extreme.

But it didn’t stop at sky-diving, bull-running, or Snake Canyon motorcycle jumping.

Okay. So maybe skateboarding in those events that have contestants shooting fifteen or twenty feet into the air could be considered extreme. Pushing yourself one-footed down the sidewalk and then coasting for six feet – not so much.

On my way to work this morning, I noticed that Broken Arrow has an Extreme hair salon. I’m not really sure what that means. Will you leave later with all your hair hacked off? To the point your friends will notice your ‘extreme’ style change? Or is the trim achieved with a chainsaw? That, even I would admit, would be a fairly extreme way to get a haircut.

What about the Extreme nail salon? There is one of those, too. It makes me think of those pictures of oddballs who never, ever, trim their fingernails and have those long twisty things hanging off the ends of their digits. That’s extreme, in my book. Clippers and a nail file? I don’t see how that qualifies. Applying nail polish and paint? Extreme? Maybe if it is done with a snow-blower.

Most of these, I’ve seen. Some are courtesy of Google. They are local.

Extreme sports camp. Extreme nutrition. Extreme DJs. Extreme food couponing.

Then, there are the products. Drink down a No Fear Extreme energy drink and perhaps you’ll experience supersonic flight – without the jet. The Extreme-Clean drink promises to run through your gastric system eliminating toxins on its merry (but extreme) journey.

Are things better, when Extreme?

If so, then let me show you some Extreme Books, or try the Extreme Irish Stew!

Nah…

On second thought, I’ll stick with moderate to slightly-exciting.

Fresh and tasty…

It must have been a case of the ‘hungries’ (as my Dad used to say) that made today’s batch of Irish Stew wind up as a photo. If it wasn’t so early in the morning, more than likely I’d be sampling a bowlful instead of writing about it.

Fresh russet potatoes, carrots, celery, roast beef, onions and spices – ready to ladle into a bowl and serve up with slices of bread.

Breakfast of champions. The Irish ones, anyway.

Twilight on Main.

It is pretty rare to have open parking spaces in front of the shop in the early evening. It is the week following Thanksgiving, and it could be that people are at home recovering from Black Friday, Cyber Monday (with Small Business Saturday wedged in between), and those dollars spent on turkey and the fixin’s.

Not just the Rose District on Wednesday evening, either. Fab reported her first slow day in years in Midtown with only a slight increase in hungry-traffic from breakfast to lunch.

I took the opportunity to take some pictures – strolling outside just after dusk. A cool evening, the breeze having died down. Not cold, but comfortable for this late in November. Delicious is drifting by, no doubt something on the grill at the Main Street Tavern. Click on the image to join me on the street corner…

In the darkness of the twilight, it is a little easier to see inside the shop. The window tinting makes for a greatly reduced electric bill, but makes it tough to peer in during the day. And it’s clear that I need some outside lettering on the windows to replace the hard to read computer printed sign taped up on the inside. (That’s been in the plans all along, but all things have their time and place on the priority list.)

The awning stands right out though.

There is news in the Tulsa World this morning about imminent announcements regarding the Rose District, including further restaurant plans. There have been rumors along Main Street for a time, and it is exciting that the details will shortly be shared.

I’m happy to be a part of the new Rose District, and there are changes and new announcements being readied for McHuston Booksellers and Irish Bistro as well.

Stop in and see us, or at least – keep in touch!
