Sleep of the Dead Air

The song on the radio winds down and finishes. Silence. Where’s the deejay? Where’s the next song? Nothing. Just silence.

We called it “dead air,” back in the broadcasting days. They probably don’t have it anymore, since most programming is accomplished by human-assisted computers. For some reason, even after all these years, I still have nightmares about the silence.

Last night, the scene was pretty chaotic (like most nightmares, I suppose) and the song was running out and I grabbed a pair of headphones and put them on, ready to talk my way out of the disaster.

“It’s partly cloudy and 78 degrees,” I said to my nightmare audience. “We’re looking for a high today of 85.” It was all a lie. In my dream, I was just making it all up. You say anything to avoid dead air.

“Where are all the records?” I remember asking whoever it was in the control room with me. The truth is, all the records are in flea markets and collectible malls. Records – those round vinyl things that look like CDs but are usually black and groovy in the old-fashioned groove sort of way – well…records only make appearances these days (or nights) in bad dreams.

A fellow radio-employee told me once he had similiar nightmares. He was a newsman and in his dream he’d be in the booth awaiting the start of the newscast and looked down to see that there was nothing in his hands, no copy to read. No news.

It turns out, he was a fortune teller and those dreams were just forecasting the state of the business some years down the road.

No news is good news, these days. Except for sleeping former broadcasters.

My Number

According to the latest ING TV ad, my number (the amount of money I should have saved by the time I retire) is $1,271,046. Man, did I drop the ball somewhere.

Knocked me back a little bit, realizing that you have to be a millionaire to retire these days. I suspected as much, but it is another thing to see it in print (or on a TV ad, as the case may be).

Starting to work at age 20 and working until 65, the ING (a Connecticut investment firm) figure would require the saving of some $28,000 a year to keep untouched until retirement. Speaking only for myself – I didn’t earn near that amount through my twenties. Granted that was back during caveman days…but still.

On the monthly plan, you twenty-somethings need to start putting back $2358.00 a month for your retirement years. People like me who have frittered away our millions can start now and stash away $18,000 a month for the golden years, to be sufficiently covered.

I may need to pick up a shift or two at Taco Bueno. Would you like to Bueno-size that?

Spend a little of your retirement money to help me reach mine!

MLBALCS: (we live in abbreviated times…)

For the uninitiated – probably just about everyone these days, baseball having fallen from its lofty perch as “America’s Passtime.” Remember “baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie?” These days its more along the lines of – football, ribs, and funnel cakes.

Here is the breakdown MLB = major league baseball. ALCS = American League Championship Series. The series of games that determine which team represents the American League in the World Series.

For once, I can root for either team. Having grown up in the Mickey Mantle – Roger Maris era of baseball, I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was counting my age on one hand. (I still do that, but I start over so many times I cramp up.)

I’ve been to more Rangers games than any other team. We were lucky enough to see some great ones there: Nolan Ryan, Griffey Jr. (playing for the Mariners). They’re close to home, a great atmosphere, fun ballpark. Club section with waiters bringing drinks and nachos.

So, despite the cruel comments I’ve already read about Yankee fans (obnoxious being one of the kinder words used), I’m ready to cheer on both teams. I’d love for the Yanks to head to the post-season again: it’s tradition for me! On the other hand, I know full well the Rangers have not been. Not once.

Maybe it’s time to spread the glory around a little. Nolan is back in the house, this time as an owner of the Rangers. A couple of the Yankee starters are former Rangers. On the other hand, George Steinbrenner is looking down on this one, the longtime owner having been called up in July.

I think I’ll root for good calls from the umpires and let it go at that…
